Things will start to get serious the roof coverings and exterior doors start to get ripped off and windows will be shattered. This damage is normally light, shingles ripped off, maybe a few broken windows and some leaves ripped off of trees. (An asterisk means that the damage rating is from a significant tornado) If the tornado just so happens to do either no damage or not hit anything, it is labeled as an EFU, or an EF-Unknown. And yes, it is based off of the actual damage indicators that the National Weather Service use. The damage is on a scale of EF0 through EF5. (Better have your EF Scale and Damage PDF from the NWS ready!). If a tornado hits a building or town, it will get a rating based on damage. Tornadoes can also be in many forms, from little ropes to giant wedges. These tornadoes can change paths slightly but will never travel west and will always go with the storm. TVS will never tell you what strength it is exactly, so don't assume that the pink TVS means an EF5. Once the tornado is on the ground, the signature turns into a TVS, or Tornado Vortex Signature, ranging from green (weak) to pink (very strong) Sometimes strong mesocyclones have the TVS marker show up before anything is on the ground. From the ground, the meso looks like a lowering in the cloud base and is rotating. This means a meso (mesocyclone) has formed and will soon spawn a tornado. Mesocyclonic signature near Hibbing THIB radarĪfter the storm forms the hail core, it is only a matter of time until you see a green mesocyclone signature on radar. The hail can get a severe thunderstorm warning if it exceeds 1 inch. This will eventually cause damage along with it, but the hail damage update isn't out yet. After a short time, the pink hail core will form, ranging in size from the size of half a town to almost as large as the rain core itself. First, the dark red rain core will form, bringing heavy rains to that localized area. After becoming a giant anvil supercell, the core will start to form. It eventually doubles and triples its size, having greens, yellows, and oranges. As the storm begins to form, it begins as a little bit of blue on the radar. to 3 p.m., depending on the risk/thermos for the day. Storms normally begin to form from 10 a.m. Very vibrant colors on opposite ends of the spectrum are touching on the long side, known as couplets, are a signature of rotation. Positive values (red, tan) displayed show wind moving away from the radars location. ![]() And negative values (green, blue, purple) displayed show wind moving towards the radar's location. You can switch it back by pressing it againīase Velocity displays the windspeed and direction. You can change your radar to base velocity by clicking on the button that says 'reflectivity' in the bottom right corner. The other radar is in Hibbing THIB This radar is a short-range reflectivity radar although it can't scan far it is of higher quality showing more details in reflectivity and base velocity. There are two different radars located on the map the main radar being long-range reflectivity which scans every part of the map other than the southeast corner and southwest corner this radar is labeled KHZL. ![]() Reflectivity is also used to locate hook echoes. Pink, white, and blue is often hail, but can occasionally be a debris cloud. ![]() ![]() Most often, green represents light rain, yellow moderate rain, and orange to red severe rain. Reflectivity is used to see precipitation and mostly lines up with the clouds. This is the default radar upon opening the radar map. The Twisted Lite map only includes the entirety of the normal map. The rest of the map has more flat land, mostly farm fields and trees in the surrounding areas. The westernmost side is full of rolling hills and forests, ranging from a few sprinkles of trees to dense forests. Lakes sprinkle the southwest portion of the map, and a river flowing from a giant lake can be seen in the northeastern portion of the map. More information about the towns can be found here.
